Quad bikes that run on a battery instead of a tank

An electric ATV replaces the engine with a motor and the fuel tank with a battery pack. What disappears with them is most of the maintenance: no carburettor to clean, no oil to mix, no spark plug to change, no cold-start ritual. What remains is charging the pack, checking the brakes and keeping the tyres at the right pressure. For a first machine that is a real advantage — the rider has fewer things to think about and can concentrate on the terrain.

The range spans two very different jobs. The QMC Renegate 36V 800W is a compact quad for a young rider on a lawn or a fenced yard. The QMC ECO Maverick 60V 1500W sits at the other end: sixty volts, fifteen hundred watts and up to 45 km/h, enough for an adult on a farm track. Between the two, voltage is the number that tells you the most — it drives both top speed and the ability to keep pulling on a climb.

• Torque from zero. An electric motor delivers full pull at the first turn of the wheel, so hill starts need no clutch work.
• Noise. Near silence makes these machines usable on campsites, in stables and on estates where a petrol engine would cause complaints.
• Range. Quoted for a light rider on level ground; sand, mud and stop-start riding can halve it.
• Battery life. The pack is a wear part. Ask about replacement availability for the model you choose — it decides what the quad is worth in four years.

Choosing between the classes

If the rider is a child, start from children's ATVs, where every machine has a parental speed limiter. Older and heavier riders should look at teenage quads, which offer both 1000–1500 W electric drives and 125 cc petrol alternatives. Frequently asked questions

Can an electric quad be used in the rain?

Light rain and wet grass are normal operating conditions; deep water is not. Controllers and connectors are splash-protected rather than sealed, so avoid fording streams and washing the machine with a pressure washer aimed at the electrics. Dry the quad after a wet ride and store it with the battery charged. Pay particular attention to the charging port: water sitting in the socket is the most common cause of an electrical fault in this class.

How should the battery be stored over winter?

In a dry room above freezing, charged to roughly half or more, and topped up every couple of months. A pack left flat in an unheated garage loses capacity permanently — that is the single most common reason an electric quad feels weak in its second spring.
